100 great artists @ etsy you might want to visit…
So last week I got the most crazy idea that I would compile a list of 100 artists @ Etsy and I immediately set to work.
I wanted to write a few words about the “why” & “how” of the affair, but I realized nobody would actually care, so to keep things simple let’s just say that I have discovered many great and talented artists through Etsy, and it is getting more and more difficult each day to browse through their shops since there is no way to tag or organize your favorites into categories on the site and I figured a “memo” or “post-it” article would be of great use, not just for me or for people already familiar with Etsy, but also for people who would like to discover new artists but do not have the time to extensively browse the internet or Etsy for that matter….
I chose for the moment to limit myself to painters, illustrators and mixed-media artists so you will not find here ceramists, sculptors, artists who create dolls, etc… (those will come later).
The list is derived from my favorites and it is organized in alphabetical order by the name of the shops. Feel free to comment and add any artist that you particularly like. This list is only a small introduction to the world of Art on Etsy.
Also please note that I use Firefox and have put a lot of “ ” to format this post, but I have absolutely no idea as to how Internet Explorer will deal with that…

I just wish to clarify a few points though :
There were no actual requirements for being on such a list either than to belong in my favorites. I think I really got the idea to compile this list because it was getting so difficult to browse through my nearly 200 pages of favorite items and more than 100 pages of favorite sellers and I figured it would be a nice way to get to see things a little bit clearer…
So yes this selection is highly subjective and reflects my personal tastes – but not only, for there are some artists on that list that are not particularly favorites of mine, whose work I would probably not buy even if I could, but I included them because I think they have great talent and a strong artistic universe. (And whenever I include artists in my favorite sellers it is really because some of their artwork strongly appeal to me in one way or another, even if I do not love all their work.)
I have not browsed the entire Artist category of Etsy and do no intend to, and the list is by no means intented to be a list of the “best” or “top” artists of Etsy. This would both be ridiculous and preposterous !
It is merely an introduction and should only induce people to browse and discover even more artists.
I myself discover good artists every day and amazing one often enough to call Etsy my favorite place of inspiration. This is my tribute to Etsy in a way.

Indeed ! I couldn’t agree more.
There are so many great talents to discover even in the categories I have considered and so many more in other categories (woodcut artists, gocco printers, doll creators, sculptors, ceramists, photographers…)
So thank you for all the links you are posting there, I will look at all of them and be sure that other “selections” will be issued…

Very nice collection, lots of new faces (to me) on this list. A little too much emphasis on illustration perhaps, but this is a question of personal taste- everyone on this list has some fantastic work, kudos for organizing it!

I tend to agree with you here, but it is not so much a “question of personal taste” as a result of a process of selection relying, as I wrote, largely upon my list of favorites. And I think one of the reasons why illustrators are well represented is that they often come up on the front page of Etsy and therefore have more exposure than other artists.
A sequel would probably be the thing to do right now…
Wow what a fantastic variety of artists. As I discover more shops at etsy I just become more and more amazed with the beautiful products etys artist are creating and selling. I think I am just going to end up peddling my wares to purchase from others on etsy.

There are some good artists up there, but why does everything on Etsy seem to look like my 4 year old daughter drew it?
Or more likely, made a mess, then scanned and posted it?
Aren’t there any REAL artists that sell on that site??
Priscilla : I think there are what you call “real” artists on Etsy.
I absolutely love Betsy Walton for instance. But then again Etsy is not a gallery, it is a site where everybody can sell what they make and it is not just about the “Art” category but with every other one : you have to sift through the site to find the real gems.
And you may think there is so little quality in the number of stuff available there, or you may just tune your eye to what you like and not even see the rest… That is what I do, and the experience is a joy everytime I browse the site. Because then I only see the beautiful things and I go “Wow!”

Faith thank you so much for leaving this message, for although you do not know it I have a thing with butterflies, and so clicking on the links to your blog & then to your Etsy shop brought me great joy…
I had at one point the project of making another list, and had I the courage to do it I would probably focus on ceramics or other forms of art @ Etsy, but truly I intend to spend less time on this blog of mine, and as you may have noticed I am furthermore taking it in quite another direction from what it originally was, so I doubt there will ever be another list here.
